Flying Colours bests rival for top PICA count

Tassie rivals Flying Colours and Focal Press faced off once again in the new-look Tasmanian PICAs, with Flying Colours finishing on top after losing out last year.

The Launceston printer won 12 Diemens, as Tassie gold awards are now know, avenging last year’s result that saw its Hobart nemesis gain five nominations to the 2014 National Print Awards and win three golds.

Focal was still in second place with eight Diemens, and did win the Grand Diemen – the top printing award equivalent to the Judges Choice award – for its book submission The Wall.

The Tasmanian awards have adopted a new name and identity for the event to signal their intention to keep it running as a standalone competition.

The Diemen Awards take their name from Van Diemen’s Land, an early name for Tasmania during early European settlement in honour of Anthony van Diemen, the Governor-General of the Dutch East Indies.

Platinum awards, major awards for each category, are now known as Grand Diemen awards.

The Tasmanian awards also broke new ground, hosting a raft of digital, mobile and online categories as well as design, to further enhance the  relevance of the event in today’s market.

Advertising agency Redjelly took out the Grand Diemen for digital design for its Tasmanian Whisky Trail website, and design studio Futago won the grand prize for its efforts with The Apple Shed museum and cider house.

Jeremy Scott from Impress Print won print apprentice of the year and the Young Leader Award.

Tasmanian Tafe students Kira Atton and Anthony Klimeck took out digital and design student of the year respectively.
