Geon gone: Todisco family buys Tasmanian business

The family announced that it would revert to its original name of Mercury Walch and was likely to retain a "majority" of the Geon staff.

"Today, we are pleased to announce that the newly rekindled Mercury Walch has acquired all Geon's Tasmanian operations.

"Mercury Walch was the original trading name for Geon's Tasmanian operations and it has a long and proud history in the Tasmanian, and wider Australian, print market."

The Todiscos also own Hobart-based Print Applied Technology, which they acquired in 2008, and Mercedes Waratah in Melbourne, the company that was born out of PrintLinx.

Mercedes Waratah managing director Michael Todisco said the family had proven its "very real confidence" in the Tasmanian market.

"This confidence has only grown over the last five years, so when an opportunity arose to increase our investment in the state, we moved swiftly."

The Todiscos' business activities have been the focus of attention for mixed reasons.

Their company, Mercedes Waratah, recently won a $500,000 contract with the Department of Health.

However, in 2011, developments included a $120,000 fine for an incorrect tax claim at Print Applied Technology, being 'thrown out' of its Port Melbourne facility over a fight with the landlord, and asset-less shelf company PrintLinx being liquidated with a $1.5 million tax debt.

Geon has now been completely dismantled since collapsing on 21 February.

The Queensland operations were closed on 4 March, Blue Star acquired the rest of the east coast operations on 5 March, and Perth was taken over by a management buyout on 18 March.

Across the Tasman, Blue Star New Zealand acquired Geon's Christchurch-based labels business on 4 March and the rest of its New Zealand fixed assets on 15 March.
