Heidelberg launches carbon neutral scheme for Speedmaster presses

Customers that invest in presses will now receive certification showing how many tonnes of carbon have been offset to compensate the greenhouse gas emissions output during the machine manufacturing process.

The initiative, which costs €1,000 ($1,310) for a B3 press, is the result of a partnership between Heidelberg and Darmstadt University of Technology, in Germany, which cooperated to calculate the CO2 footprint.

According to Heidelberg, around 220 tonnes of carbon dioxide is generated from the manufacturer of a Speedmaster XL 105-5+L press.

Heidelberg will provide each customer with a certificate that features an ID number that will enable them to track the climate project they support online.

Lindsay Barnes, Heidelberg Australia’s general manager for product management, told ProPrint that locally, the press maker had developed further strategies to coincide with certification.

“These new business tools have been integrated with Heidelberg’s Machine Room Audit production profile to identify waste and inefficiency,” he said.

“This new broad integrated approach to printing is a Business Sustainability Audit.  This audit is to assist print management and owners in a high level overview and taking their green printing to a more efficient level.”

He added that the audit will work across the entire print room and is aimed at helping printer’s obtain government grants in line with the upcoming carbon tax.
