Industry needs new blood, TAFE students told

“You need to be adaptable. You need to be open to new ideas. You need to be open to learning something new,” said keynote speaker David Crowther, managing director of Colour Graphic Services.

“The one constant you can expect is change – I cannot emphasise that enough.”

Around 150 students, teachers, relatives and sponsors attended the Sydney Institute TAFE awards ceremony on 9 August.

The winner at this year’s LIA-Heidelberg NSW Graduate of the Year Awards, pre-press apprentice Brett Foran, added to his medal haul with five awards at the TAFE ceremony.

Crowther, who began his apprenticeship in 1975, said young printers needed to remain open-minded as they would have to adapt to different roles throughout their careers.

He said the printing industry was a major employer, but was threatened by a lack of fresh blood, as seen in RMIT’s recent announcement that it would exit print training.

Ultimo College associate director Alison Wood called on companies to get behind the Sydney Institute so that its hands-on training remained relevant to industry needs.
