McKellar printing personalised stamps live at world expo

General manager Chris Norgate said it is the first time McKellar has produced stamps live – and "the first time worldwide that it has been done at this scale, quality and complexity".

"Some stamps will feature three different printing processes – offset, letterpress and digital – all together on the one sheet," he told ProPrint.

The Melbourne firm is printing stamps every day of the expo, which is being held in the Royal Exhibition Building from 10-15 May.

The live printing is being done on a Fuji Xerox Color 1000, with the offset and letterpress components of the sheets produced in-house beforehand, he said.

Norgate said the stamps could be personalised with visitors' photos and then used on letters. McKellar is also producing personalised postcards and stamp booklets, he added.

He said the expo job had come about due to McKellar's eight-year relationship with Australia Post, for which it produces millions of stamps per year.

Printing at the expo will help McKellar strengthen that relationship and also allow it to reach non-print people, he said.

"It's a rare opportunity to promote ourselves outside print and agencies to the stamp and philatelic collecting community. It's also a chance for us to showcase our capabilities to a wider audience. It's a good chance for us to broaden awareness of our brand," he told ProPrint.

McKellar has ISO 12647-2 for offset and 12647-8 for digital, said Norgate.
