McPherson’s replaces 12-year-old Speedmaster with 10-colour XL 105

The Victoria-based book printer has installed a brand new 10-colour Heidelberg Speedmaster XL 105 at its Mulgrave site.

The XL 105 was installed over the Christmas break and went into full operation earlier this month. It replaced an eight-colour Heidelberg, which had been in use for 12 years.

Heidelberg key account manager Andreas Sommer called the XL105 its “flagship” press and said it was its “most highly productive machine available.”

“The machine is capable of printing on both sides of the sheet in a single pass, up to a maximum speed of 15,000 sheets per hour,” he said.

McPherson’s Printing chief executive Alan Fahy hailed the investment a key ingredient in McPherson’s long-term strategy.

“The new press opens new potential markets for McPherson’s, as well as providing our existing customers with new opportunities,” he said.

The XL 105 has been spec’d out with Heidelberg’s colour management system, Inpress Control. McPherson’s claimed it would improve its environmental footprint by reducing waste volumes, cutting emissions and reducing power and alcohol consumption.

The book printing company, which is a subsidiary of McPherson’s Limited, reported a mild 6% drop in earnings from $1.6m to $1.5m for the six months to December 2010. This was off the back of a marginal year-on-year fall in revenue from $32.4m to $31.3m.

In its statement on the ASX, McPherson’s blamed the revenue drop in the printing division to “the continuation of subdued market conditions”.
