Melbourne printer expands into digital labels

Maroondah Printing is the first Australian company to invest in the LPS215 digital label system from Intec Printing Solutions, sold through Australian Graphic Servicing (AGS).

The all-in-one system includes the LP215 label printer, LCF215 label finishing solution and the Intec rip pod, complete with PC workstation and software needed to produce on demand labels.

Rob and Melissa Pruis are the owner operators of Maroondah Printing, located in Melbourne’s outer eastern suburb of Ringwood.

Pruis says, “We have grown a good business over the last 30 years surviving on the traditional fare of the standard offset printer: business stationery, leaflets, newsletters.

“Whilst we feel we have continued to keep pace with the changing landscape of the print industry with digital and Ctp over the years traditional offset continues to be challenging and you need to be on the lookout constantly for other opportunities.

“I have always believed that packaging and labels are the two areas in this industry that will continue to be strong. We have printed flat sheet labels for clients over the years but have found a growing demand for labels on rolls in the last 18 months.

“We have discussed the pros and cons of moving into this market but have been unable to justify the large investment required to put in a machine, until we saw the brochure on the Intec label printer. For a smaller entry level type machine I was impressed with its speed and print quality.

“As well as the ability to print on such a wide range of materials including synthetics, textured and clear adhesives, including white toner for the clear, the big selling point though was the finishing unit which can custom cut any shape you want. Simply send a die line to the machine and it will cut that shape. It will then weed the excess material and slit the master roll into smaller rolls allowing multiple jobs to be run at the same time. It can even cut different shapes for each label across the width of the web. The installation was seamless and the training was clear and comprehensive.

“Our first job is running in a couple of days. We are excited with the possibilities this machine will give us going forward.”

AGS says it is capable of printing and finishing up to 2,000 4×4 inch labels in less than 20 minutes, while the LCF215 label finisher is capable of finishing digitally printed labels at 3 metres per minute.

Brett Chalkley, Business Development Print & Finishing, AGS says, “For traditional offset printers looking at getting into short-run labels it is an ideal cost effective complete printing, die-cutting and stripping solution.

“For an established label printer, it is a great investment in a market where customers are frequently requesting shorter and shorter runs, for which the LPS215 Label system is ideal.

“As all labels are different in size it is often difficult to assess the exact break-even point. To make this simpler the system comes with Edge2Print software, which enables you to completely cost the finished product before you quote.”
