Melbourne printer expands its wide format

Melbourne’s TDC3 Print Centre is expanding its wide format reach by installing its second printer, a Roland DG VS640, and is hoping to ramp up its trade offering.

Managing director Mithra Samaranayake says the decision to buy the new eco-solvent roll-to-roll printer was driven by client demand for higher print quality on a tighter budget.

“There was demand for high quality printing from ad agencies and design firms that we could not deliver on our existing equipment,” he says.

“We did a lot of research and found the VS640 was more competitive because it gave us higher quality with lower running costs than our existing eco-solvent machine.

“Clients are demanding more work at higher quality with lower prices, so the only way we could do that is to cut costs. This printer’s efficiency allows us to do that."

Samaranayake says wide format is a growth area for his business, which also includes offset, digital and signage, and he hopes the new machine will lure more trade clients who need short runs at high quality.

“Wide format is a growth area for the whole industry and trade work was drying up in offset and small digital – wide format is something not everyone can do so we decided to expand that part of the business,” he says.

“Lots of small print shops need runs of 10-100 units at a higher quality than their machines allow, or have an existing client that needs a different type of work to what they provide.”

Samaranayake says since installing the VS640 a month ago he has seen good trade potential and numerous printers are already using it despite not yet having advertised it.

He says the new printer will allow his company to offer higher quality to both trade and commercial clients and the results so far have been pleasing.

The VS640 will join an existing Roland DG 640 1640mm wide format eco-solvent printer.
