Muller Martini to focus on added-value applications at Drupa

These applications include coloured stitching wire, cover flaps, contour die-cutting, bookmarks and merchandise samples, and the manufacturer has announced that the machinery to produce these “gimmicks” will appear on its 2,100sqm stand in Dusseldorf.

Muller Martini Australia managing director Livio Barbagallo told ProPrint that Drupa would offer local printers a chance to learn from their international counterparts about using added-value ideas to open up new revenue streams.

“That is why we always take customers over to Europe and show them what is done over there, or to the US. Especially when it comes to gimmicks and inserts, the US market is on the leading edge.

“In the US, they have been doing that for many years with all those gimmicks and inserts – sometimes magazines with up to 30 inserts,” said Barbagallo.

Muller Martini’s Drupa showpiece will include a number of machines for digital finishing, with the company providing case studies showing how European printers have used its technology to “successfully contribute to new business models”.

For instance, one Germany customer is using the Primera C140 saddlestitcher configured with inkjet system to add personalisation to magazines and catalogue advertising.

An Austrian newspaper house is using the Muller Martini ValueLiner card gluer top add tip-ons to publications, which its clients said have increased response rates.

Meanwhile, Germany-based Digital Print Group has quickly grown it share of the on-demand books market after investing in a Muller Martini Diamant MC 35 Hybrid bookline.
