News Ltd to build Queensland’s biggest printing plant

John Hartigan, News Limited’s chairman and chief executive, said the new press would make the 150-year-old Townsville Bulletin “an even more compelling proposition for both readers and advertisers”.

He said North Queensland readers would also benefit from improvements in quality of The Australian, Weekend Australian, the Courier Mail and Sunday Mail, which were all printed in Townsville.

To be commissioned in 2010, the new press will be Queensland’s largest, and capable of printing 160 pages of back-to-back four colour.

North Queensland Newspapers general manager Jason Scott was reported as saying that epitaphs were still being written for newspapers, “but the reality is the industry is still building more presses today than it ever has”.
