Gold medals were awarded to printers in all states at the gala event, with Print Applied Technology taking the sole gold for Tasmania.

The biggest win went to perennial awards night favourite Offset Alpine, which took two of the Sponsor Awards as well as two gold medals and two silvers in the general categories.

Craig Dunsford (pictured left), general manager of Offset Alpine, said: ” We are very proud of being recognised and it is an honour to be able to accept it on behalf of our wonderful team.”

The standout work of the night was Offset Alpine’s “Capabilities” book, which took home a swag of awards, including the embellishment and self-promotion categories.

This work ensured Offset Alpine secured both the Heidelberg Award for Excellence in Craft, judged from all gold medal winners by a panel appointed by Heidelberg, and the Paperlinx Award for Outstanding Excellence.

Dunsford said the web printer ran a number of individual research and development projects to develop the techniques on show in the book.

“The whole thing was reasonably challenging. We picked finishes that hadn’t been done that often – such as opaque whites over metallics, hexachrome printing – things that have been done before but that we wanted to enhance.”

The win follows a consistent run of golds at National Print Award for Offset Alpine, which also enjoyed success at last year’s ceremony.

NPA chairman John Wanless addressed a large turnout last night and said that the quality of the work was “timeless”.

“This year’s awards prove we just keep on getting better at producing high-quality print,” he said.

“With increasing competition from other media, awards such as the NPAs are important to
demonstrate the continued effectiveness and sustainability of print as a medium.”

Other big winners include Melbourne’s Adams Print, Perth’s Scott Print, Southern Colour (NSW) and South Australian company Cutler Brands, which each took home a pair of gold medals.

Momento Pro won the other Sponsor Awards, from Currie Group.

In terms of total awards, Geon was the night’s best performer by far. Its Bassendean site in Western Australia won the company’s single gold in ‘Book printing, case bound’, but the multi-site group also left with a clutch of awards comprising four silvers and a whopping nine bronzes across four states.

Entertainment for the evening was handled by engaging TV personalities Larry Emdur and Gorgi Coghlan, who teamed up to host the ceremony for the third consecutive year.

The entries were judged by an independent panel of experts including Colin Straughan, Owen King, Danny Roach, Mark Bloustein and new judges Rod Jenkins and Peter Carrigan.

Chairman of judges Rod Urquhart said he had the unenviable task of separating the “best of the best”.

“It was evident quite early in the judging process that this year was going to propose a greater than ever challenge,” said Urquhart.
