Production boost hands Civic Media Metricon and Hutchison accounts

Adam Middleton, director of the south-east Queensland-based firm, said the construction site specialist was likely to invest in yet more machinery after installing a five metre-wide Fujifilm Uvistar in August and HP Designjet L26500 in December.

Middleton said Civic had been able to win its first job with Metricon NSW due to the speed and quality boost provided by the Uvistar. The homes giant had considered sending work offshore, but has since sent a steady stream of orders to Civic, he added.

"I don't think we could have come close to their deadline [without the Uvistar]," he told ProPrint.

"We weren't as cheap as the overseas market, but our turnaround time and quality were significant and they decided to go with us."

Middleton also credited the Uvistar for a one-year contract that Civic signed in December with Hutchison Telecoms.

He said Civic had previously tendered unsuccessfully for Hutchison jobs, but could now offer much faster turnaround times and superior finishing.

The Uvistar can print multiple jobs at once due to its five-metre width. That has allowed Civic to decommission four older, slower printers: an Agfa Anapurna, a Vutek 320 and two Vutek 2360s.

"A construction site job of, say, 400 metres of mesh used to take us over a day to print and about a week to have it finished, but now it would take about 80 minutes to print it and about two hours to finish it," he said.

"We were outsourcing our finishing as well, but now we’ve pulled everything in-house. We’re now making more profit… and having greater control of turnaround times and quality."

Middleton said the Uvistar had already reached 90% capacity, so Civic was considering installing a Uvistar Pro8.

The 11-staff firm also has too much capacity for its new HP Designjet L26500, which means it might have to order a new L26500 or swap it out for a bigger model, he said.

Middleton told ProPrint that the downside of bringing in new business was that "our guys are struggling to keep up with the finishing now".
