Salmat brings $100m of new media investments under one umbrella

‘Salmat Digital’, which brings together the four companies acquired from Photon Group for $75m, is headed up by Nick Spooner, whose CV includes stints as chief digital officer at Channel 10 and chief operating officer at Ninemsn.

Salmat chief executive Grant Harrod said: “Salmat Digital is the natural evolution in Salmat’s expanding multi-channel communications portfolio.

“We now have the most comprehensive integrated digital communications capability in Australia with the largest team of dedicated digital communication professionals.”

Spooner introduced the new division at an event in Sydney on Monday 26 September, saying “multi-channel is not an option; it is a necessity”.

“We are smack bang in the eye of the digital storm,” he added.

Salmat Digital comprises web development, e-commerce and digital platforms, such as mobile and tablet.

The firm already manages major online properties such as NRL.com and AFL.com.

Its digital catalogue service, Lasoo, comes under the Salmat Digital masthead, as does its soon-to-be launched iPhone app, Roamz, a “location-based mobile application that helps users discover the world around them in real-time”.

The group has invested more than $100m over the past three years into its new media business, which employs 250 “digital experts”.

Salmat Digital will add to the group’s three existing division: Business Process Outsourcing, which manages transactional mail for the likes of Telstra and Origin Energy; Customer Contact Solutions, which comprises its call centre business; and Targeted Media Solutions, which includes its catalogue delivery operation.

Salmat has continued to plough money into its printing capabilities, including the multimillion-dollar investment in the country’s first Océ Jetstream 2200 inkjet presses.
