Sensis leads the way in carbon neutral print

According to Sensis, the company was the first major directory publisher in the world to go carbon neutral.

The Parliamentary Secretary for Climate Change and Energy Efficiency Mark Dreyfus congratulated Sensis for “bringing millions of households and businesses into Australia’s carbon neutral network”.

“In achieving certification under the Australian Government’s NCOS Carbon Neutral Program, Sensis has been able to reduce its carbon emissions across its range of technology and information services,” he said.

Sensis chief executive Bruce Akhurst said the company is reaping the rewards of a strong focus on managing its environmental footprint.

“The Yellow Pages and White Pages print and online directories are one of Australia’s largest carbon neutral products,” he said.

“We made a commitment to take responsibility for the environmental footprint of our products voluntarily and ahead of the majority of the Australian business community.”

Akhurst said the company had made significant investment in renewable energy, cook stoves, heat recovery and biomass projects.

According to Sensis, the production and supply of the directories accounts for around 175,000 tonnes of emissions per year.

The NCOS Carbon Neutral Program, established by the Australian Government in 2010, allows organisations or products to be certified as carbon neutral.

Other notable NCSO members include Australian Paper and Virgin Blue Airlines.
