SOS speeds up ultra-short book runs with country’s first Wilstead

The WDF Fastset 60/700 machine, which is due to be installed next month, “is increasingly important in our era of ultra-short book printing runs, where an order for just a few ‘C’-size books can be followed by an even shorter run of, say, A4 books”, said SOS director Michael Schulz.

The device will largely finish work coming off the printer’s pair of Océ VarioPrint 6250 machines, which are producing ultra short runs while higher-volume digital work comes off its Kodak Prosper 1000 B&W inkjet press, the first in the country.

However, Schulz told ProPrint low runs were also being migrated over to the Prosper. “We have just done a job of 400 books, all different titles – we have done true print on-demand on the Prosper.”

He added: “Because the Wilstead is flexible on all three sides, it is more suited to fast changeovers. The current solutions on the market can’t change sizes that quickly so don’t do anything for you when you do ultra-short runs.”

The unit features a barcode scanner that logs specs of each book and sends instructions such as clamp pressure to the trimmer, allowing for a five-second job change.

Wilstead managing director Bill Tunstead said: “Books-on-demand printed digitally are changing the publishing world and we believe the Fastset 60/700 is the perfect partner to any digital book press and binding line.”
