Trade finisher Whites Law conquers South Pacific with digital printing

The Melbourne finishing house beat more than 100 other entries with menus it printed for Crown Casino’s Mahongany Room.

The 20-staff operation used three Roland DG machines for the job: an XC-540 MT, an LEC-540 and an EGX-400.

Entries were judged on three criteria: creativity, innovation and execution.

Roland DG is flying Whites Law managing director Ted Congdon and customer service representative Tony Truong to Japan in April. The all-expenses paid trip will include a factory tour, a week of sightseeing and spending money.

Whites Law has also been entered into the awards’ international section, which will be decided on 17 April. The winner will receive a Roland device of its choice.

Congdon told ProPrint he thought his company had scooped the South Pacific category “because we were innovative in what we did with their machinery and showed how their three machines could be integrated”.

The menu covers were UV-printed onto white luminescent cloth and mounted to screen board. The gold was matched to a PMS colour while the wine glass pattern was printed using clear ink embossing. The logo in the centre was solvent printed on vinyl, laminated and cut using print/cut registration. It was then debossed using a die cut on the Roland engraver.

The Roland Creative Awards received more than 1000 entries worldwide. Roland managing director Marc Margetts, who was one of the five judges, praised Whites Law for its “amazing” work.

“[It] was executed perfectly and clearly demonstrates how Roland technology can work together to produce innovative and creative works,” he said.

South Pacific’s other placegetters were Signs-Qld from Caboolture and Hobart company Signrite.
