Wide Format Technology Buyer’s Guide

Agfa Anapurna H2500i

Agfa's new addition to the Anapurna range of printers is the H model, which boasts the latest LED technology.

The H2500i is a 2,500mm wide, six-colour plus white UV-LED hybrid printing platform, with extension tables and on board GUI as standard.

Utilising the latest air cooled system, the new power LED lamps are an energy saving solution (16watt/cm2) which is much lower than the conventional medium pressure lamps used on most platforms today. Coupled with ozone reduction and the reduced amount of replacement lights, the device delivers environmental and cost advantages.

The H2500i has the capabilities of printing boards up to 3,200mm long and roll stock 2,500mm wide. Utilising the latest Konica 1024i heads it can fire a fine 12-picolitre dot that enables the device to produce photorealistic images and up to 4 point text onto a wide variety of commonly used and heat sensitive substrates such as coreflute, corrugated stock, foam PVC, ally composite panels and roll materials such as SAV and PVC banner. Ionisation bars and crash sensors are housed around the shuttle, which assists with static and head protection.

Due to less heat being produced bi-directional printing is achieved more often. The user is able to activate the multiple speed options of up to 115m2 per hour. Coupled with continuous print, productivity is increased further. The solution fits comfortably into many market segments like sign shops, digital printers, photo labs and graphic screen printers.

The engine weighs 2,200kg as it is designed to last and operate 24/7. With Agfa's own software Asanti and new LED ink, the overall solution works effortlessly.

Within the current assortment there is also an H2050i hybrid and an H3200i dedicated roll to roll platform. Soon Agfa will launch two further machines that will fit into this range.

Agfa has a direct sales approach to the Oceania market and a nationwide partnership with Starleaton Digital Solutions for multiple options and support throughout Australia and New Zealand.

Durst Rho WT 250 HS

Durst has introduced its Durst Active Water Ink Technology along with the first in the range of printers based around the successful Rho P10 series, the Rho WT Series, the Rho WT 250 HS being the first to market (2.5m wide hybrid).

Durst says it pursued this new technology primarily because this is what producers of print and brand owners are demanding.

Its environmental credentials include the new water technology, with an ink consisting of 80% water and no harmful chemistry. The ink also when cured has zero smell, another big consideration in modern markets.

The Rho WT 250 HS has features to conserve power and thus consumes lower power per square metre than other printers in its class.

Durst says Rho WT 250 HS prints have a wider gamut than UV and litho, the ink filmis thin at less than 5 microns. The prints have the possibility for gloss.

As a hybrid machine it can print directly without any activator or primer onto many media, both rigid and flexible. The actual resolution is 1,000dpi, and delivers in excess of 130m2/hr in production.

The other area Durst addressed is automation. On all printers it offers different levels of automation and media handling to minimise operator input and thus maximise profit.

Durst has priced this new range on a par with its UV range for both ink and equipment.

Photoelectronic Services has been the Durst distributor here for over 20 years, with fully trained technicians on the ground locally, along with spares and supplies.

Ricoh Pro L4100

The Ricoh Pro Print L4100 series uses Ricoh’s new eco-friendly, durable aqueous resin (AR) latex ink to deliver sharp colour on a wider range of substrates, and features faster drying times and reduced energy consumption.

The new AR latex inks are available in CMYK, plus orange and green for an expanded colour gamut. White ink is also available to enhance printing on transparent or dark substrates.

The inks are suited to a wide range of uses, from posters and point of purchase to window applications and outdoor banners.

Spot colour simulation with six-colour process printing improves the ability to reproduce corporate colours and other special colours, and enables accurate printing of package proofs and other colour critical projects. High black density results in sharper details and richer tones, while improved glossiness creates more dramatic and eye-catching images.

The ability to print white ink as a foundation colour layer on transparent or dark material enhances the natural vividness of colours. With three-layer printing, where white ink is printed between colours, images are visible on both sides of transparent substrates even though the printing is only on one side. This enables more dramatic colour with backlit and other transparent signage.

Ricoh’s AR latex inks dry quickly, enabling operators to quickly move to secondary processes such as laminating and installation. Using cold cure at 60°C, the inks can be used with a variety of lighter weight and heat-sensitive media.

Supported media include film, coated paper, PET, tarpaulin, PVC, polyester cloth, cotton, wallpaper, transparent vinyl and more. In addition to substrate flexibility, cold cure saves money by reducing power consumption.

The new latex inks also offer strong environmental performance and have been awarded the Greenguard Gold certification by UL Environment in recognition of low chemical emissions and improvement in air quality where the inks are used. This signifies that Ricoh AR latex inks are suitable for use in sensitive environments such as educational and medical facilities. The inks also have minimal VOCs and odour, eliminating the need for special ventilation. Ink is delivered in reusable ink cartridges and eco-friendly ink packs.

When combined with Ricoh’s own print heads and jetting technology (which delivers multiple drop sizes as small as four pico-litres), the Ricoh AR latex inks reduce ink consumption.

Print service providers can choose between the Pro L4130, with a maximum media width of 1,371mm, or the Pro L4160, with a media width of up to 1,620mm. Both models can be configured with up to eight cartridges for the ideal ink colour configuration.

Screen W3200UVII

Screen’s Truepress Jet W3200UV, made by subsidiary Inca Digital in the UK, is now capable of up to 230m2/hr with the Billboard mode upgrade. Existing 85m2/hr and 150m2/hr models can be upgraded in the field.

Despite this productivity on a true 3.2-metre wide flatbed, the quality for outdoor distance-viewed graphics, tarpaulins, truck curtains etc is still excellent. For critical close-viewed indoor work, the ultra-high resolution modes can be user selected. The 22-pass unidirectional Super Fine Photo mode, which is ideal for critical detail and smooth skin tones, can be used for applications such as cosmetics POP displays. SFP mode also sharply resolves minute text down to 3pt size.

New UV curing settings for matt and silk effects are also productivity boosters as gloss UV curing takes longer.

Screen GP Australia managing director, Peter Scott, said, “The versatility of the machine is further extended with the Roll to Roll option – a full 3.2-metre width addition that looks ‘built into’ the press and has the fastest changeover from flatbed to roll of anything in its class. It sits snugly under the flatbed when not in use. Customers such as Sydney’s Flash Graphics, Melbourne’s Resolution Imaging and Auckland’s Cube are finding the Truepress Jet W3200UV is also a very high-productivity machine, with little downtime needed for maintenance and head cleaning. It’s great for the rush jobs at high-speed and also the critical quality ones at lower speeds.”

Screen now offers two ink choices for the W3200UV. New SI inks can be printed directly onto acrylic, polycarbonate, ACM, corrugated plastics and metal without the need for a primer coat. WJ inks, renowned for their flexibility and wide colour gamut, are the other option and resist cracking, peeling and flaking when media are bent or stressed during finishing. The inkset can be standard CMYK or Lc, Lm and white ink can be added.

Screen targets high-end point-of-purchase and retail display producers with the W3200UV. The 1,000dpi apparent resolution is suited to near-photographic work while delivering speed with quality for distance-viewed jobs.

The W3200UV does not pretend to be a low-budget jobbing hybrid flatbed – it is intended for serious volume users whose customers demand the highest quality, with speed on demand when needed. The build is to a very high engineering standard, using linear drive motors instead of belts, solid chassis and the roll-to-roll option becomes an integrated part of the build and control software once fitted.

Like all Screen equipment, it is supported by a team of factory-trained technicians and also Screen’s TRUST online diagnostic and update system.

The Screen 3200 UV is available through Graphic Art Mart and now Fuji Xerox Australia.

SwissQprint Nyala 2

The Nyala 2 is a robust flatbed printer with a 3.2 × 2 metre printing table. Print heads can be configured between 4 and 18 heads, to allow for a wide variety of colour channels and speeds up to 206m2/hr.

Print quality, powered by variable droplet print heads with a 9-picolitre minimum drop size, allows for legible 4 point text.

The Nyala 2 is also available for continuous printing with the 3.2-metre wide roll to roll option. It prints flexible media with a vacuum table and is used intelligently when printing roll media. While feeding, the vacuum briefly releases to give minimal friction and allow the media to be indexed forward. This makes the Nyala 2 able to continuously print full roll-to-roll jobs with minimal supervision.

To boost production, swissQprint Tandem mode increases productivity by up to 71%. The Nyala 2 can alternate between the front and rear halves of the table so the operator stays busy loading and unloading media from the front and rear of the table.

It also offers swissQprint 3D moiré printing. While common lenticular images are printed onto special lenticular media the swissQprint process produces the print as well as the lens. Take a sheet of standard transparent material, RIP the prepared file and choose the lenticular print mode in the user interface of the swissQprint printer. The result is a 3D moiré effect.

swissQprint UV flatbed printers suit a variety of markets, including screen and offset printers, sign and graphics, display companies, industrial printing applications and niche specialty print jobs.

All swissQprint machines are supplied with a complete 12-month onsite warranty package. An extended warranty contract and a service contract are also available.
