Scott Print and Offset Alpine win Sappi gold

At a ceremony at the Museum of Contemporary Art, Perth-based Scott Print won gold in the ‘General Print’ category for its Gumala Presentation Folder, while Sydney-based Offset Alpine won gold in the ‘Magazines Web’ category for the September 2009 issue of Vogue Australia.

Scott Print also picked up silver in the ‘Packaging’ category. Sydney printers Hannanprint and Sydney Allen also won silver awards in the ‘Magazines Web’ and ‘Brochures’ categories respectively.

Rounding out the winners, PMP Print picked up a bronze award in ‘Magazine Web’, while Valley Edge picked up a bronze in the ‘Digital Printing’ category. Blue Star won a bronze award in the ‘General Print’ category, and Gunns and Taylor won a bronze in ‘Brochures’.

The Sappi awards recognise any printing work done on the Sappi’s range of fine paper. The ‘Trading’ division of the awards pits Australian and New Zealand companies against entries from the rest of Asia and the Central and South American region.

The gold wins put Scott Print and Offset Alpine in the running for the Sappi International Printer of the Year Awards, which will be held in September. Both companies will be vying for an ‘elephant’ trophy along with gold winners in the same category from Europe, North America, and Africa.

Tim Schafer, managing director of Sappi Trading Australia, said: “Our printers are some of the best in the world. We are proud of the honour they have brought to the region and have confidence that the work of our gold award winners, Scott Print and Offset Alpine Printing, will be recognised with an elephant trophy.”

Sappi Trading received 1,593 entries across 11 categories for this year’s awards. The five judges, picked from industry associations around the world, included Australian printing identity Greg Grace, who last week announced his retirement from Heidelberg.

Judges examined entries, which were assigned a unique number to ensure anonymity and objectivity, based on technical proficiency, overall impact, degree of difficulty, and quality of finishing.
