APN, Horton Media and RPP win SWUG awards

APN’s Hastings print centre won the Single Width User Group (SWUG) award for Best Overall Four Colour Newspaper for its production of Hawkes Bay Today.

APN’s Ellerslie site snared the Best Overall Print Quality Double Width award for its work on The New Zealand Herald.

Horton Media took out the Best Coldset Commercial Publication for the Hinterland Times and also filled the minor places.

RPP Ballarat was given the Best Overall Print Quality gong for producing the Bendigo Advertiser.

Three of the four winning newspapers were printed on Goss presses, while the other came off a Manroland. Goss and Manroland also printed all the publications that filled the minor places.

Joe Vaz from Newsprinters Shepparton was named Apprentice of the Year.

Tristan Couzens from RPP Manudrah received a $20,000 travel scholarship. Due to the high standard of entries, Dean McManus from Fairfax Regional Printers was also given a $10,000 runner-up scholarship. Both will be going to Drupa.

The SWUG conference was held in Brisbane from March 23-25 and attracted more than 180 delegates from 32 print sites.
