SmallPrint saves $70,000 after digital overhaul

Over the past 18 months, the company has installed two Ricoh Aficio MP C7500 colour printers and four Ricoh Pro 1356EX monochrome printers.

SmallPrint production manager Lyn Hood told ProPrint that the company replaced most of its digital equipment after its previous supplier “couldn’t provide the functionality and finishing processes we were looking for”.

“It was about maintaining what we have, but also streamlining the production processes,” she said.

“We were looking for a simple product that could handle the insertion of tabs, the insertion of a colour page, and hole-punching.”

As a result, the company said colour print productivity was up 66%, B&W productivity had increased 52% and the company had seen a 30% reduction in printing costs, all of which roughly translated to $70,000 a year in labour savings.

The new presses have also boosted SmallPrint’s colour printing capabilities from 25ppm to 70ppm, and B&W capacity from 55ppm to 135ppm.

Even though the company is sticking to its core product offering of learning and assessment report manuals, Hood said there was potential for the printer to expand its product offering down the track.

“There are now options we can look at with software packages to provide a different product,” she said.

SmallPrint was established in 1998. It employs roughly 45 people and has a client base that extends to the UK, USA and south-east Asia.
